ASA 103, 104 Live Aboard School


This is the intermediate cruising standard for individuals with basic cruising experience. The student will act as skipper or crew of a 30-50 foot boat sailing by day in coastal waters. This course includes knowledge about gear and equipment, safety, weather,  and seamanship. You will learn skills in boat handling under power and sail, crew overboard recovery, docking, anchoring, reefing, and heaving to.  You will gain knowledge of boat systems (engine cooling, fuel, electrical, marine head), maintenance procedures, and emergency situations. You will plan and provision for your cruise, learn more about weather and radio communications, plot and sail a course to a destination, anchor overnight, and dock in a transient slip or pick up a mooring. You will also learn more about sail trim. During the class you will be expected to cook underway and at anchor as well as do clean-up chores. 

                cto skipper a sloop-rigged auxiliary powered (inboard or outboard engine) keelboat of approximately 25 to 35 feet length by day in moderate winds (up to 20 knots) and sea conditions. You will gain knowledge of cruising sailboat terminology, basic boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, docking procedures, intermediate sail trim, navigation rules, basic coastal navigation, anchoring, weather interpretation, safety and seamanship.


Prerequisites: ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing

And, you must show the ability to demonstrate competencies in all knowledge and skills elements of that Standard.

Recommendations: A minimum of 24 on-water sailing hours before undertaking ASA 103

The student will learn to skipper a sloop-rigged, auxiliary powered keelboat of approximately 30 to 45 feet in length during a multi-day cruise upon inland or coastal waters in moderate to heavy winds (up to 30 knots) and sea conditions. You will gain knowledge of provisioning, galley operations, boat systems, auxiliary engine operation, routine maintenance procedures, advanced sail trim, coastal navigation including basic chart plotting and GPS operation, multiple-anchor mooring, docking, health and safety, emergency operations, weather interpretation, and dinghy/tender operation.


Prerequisites: ASA 101  Basic Keelboat Sailing, ASA 103  Basic Coastal Cruising

And, you must show the ability to demonstrate competencies in all knowledge and skills elements of those Standards.

Recommendations: ASA recommends a minimum of 80 on-water sailing hours before undertaking ASA 104.
